Costume Party tomorrow!
Tomorrow is our “Fall Festival” and costume party!
At our center, each age group/teacher puts together an activity session for 30 minutes and we rotate. All the teachers get to spend some time with all the kids, and we have so much fun! We set it up so that they rotate throughout the classrooms on a schedule and it really is a blast. After the rotation, the kids parents sign up and...

Question.
adventures-in-daycare:
How do you handle students that “talk-back” or always say “no” when they are being told to do something?
You’ll always have children who act this way, but it doesn’t mean you can’t work on it and change it, though it isn’t always easy.
I’m kind of the “behavior guru” at my centers and the biggest thing is for teachers to thrive on expectations and use them to their...

Stone Soup
I have no photos for this, because I wasn’t in the classroom this day, but I love this fall activity and it’s so fun for the kids.
As a capstone to our harvest theme, we read the book Stone Soup - which not only highlights items of the harvest such as onions and potatoes, but also shows the children what teamwork looks like and how to cooperate. It also shows them how to take each...

Sensory Bins!
In an effort to re-organize my room before our ECERS rating scales, I decide I want to amp up the Sensory area in my room. Also because I know with our upcoming grant, I have a wicked double bin sensory table on the horizon.
I went out and got a really good price on tupperware packs at Kmart and am working on filling them with supplies for various sensory experiences to always have on hand....

Song of the Week
Did You Ever See a Pumpkin?
(Sung to Did You Ever See a Lassie)
Did you ever see a pumpkin,
A pumpkin
A pumpkin.
Did you ever see a pumpkin,
that grows in a patch.
There’s big ones
and little ones.
There’s smooth ones
and bumpy ones.
Did you ever see a pumpkin
that grows in a patch!
(*use gestures to represent the opposites big/little smooth/bumpy* no signs)

Just gotta rant.
TEACHERS. UNDERSTAND THIS.
Tracing does NOT help the kids learn ANYTHING!
Give them other ways to build and tone the muscles in their hand if you want to “help them write” well. Tracing only helps them learn to TRACE. Let them trace a stencil as part of a project or on their own terms.
You might as well pump the kids full of worksheets. Not okay.
I have a teacher who’s kids...

Preschool Tip
A tip for preschool teachers all over the world!!
Organic, open structured learning has been proven to be more effective for PS/PK kids as they learn best through experiences and self-centered play and discovery.
Techniques such as Kid Writing are useful in this aspect as it is discovery based, and doesn’t matter what the end product is.
PROCESS OVER PRODUCT.
In the same aspect, it is...
